All our Articles

Opal is the birthstone for October and measures a 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. this colourful gemstone is primarily produced in Australia.

Opal can contain up to 20% water which therefore makes it potentially quite brittle and easily chipped.

They can be made into a doublet or triplet. This is a form of treatment where a section of the opal is backed with epoxy resin. Therefore creating a doublet or topped with resin to create a triplet. This adds thickness, strength and weight to pieces that are otherwise thin or brittle. Even still, it’s essential that the design keeps the gemstone as safe as possible.
