Reusing Metal

Reusing metal for your bespoke jewellery has so much appeal

Here are three main reasons:

  • Sentimental value- Being able to incorporate inherited rings or jewellery
  • Ethical reasons- Offering assurance that no new mining has occurred
  • Financial reasons- Spreading the cost, especially if you have a significant amount of high carat gold

We are in full support of repurposing your own metal, as it aligns more with the term “recycled” as we know it- meaning you don’t waste what you have. Plus, one of the beauties of gold is that it can be melted down and reformed, something which our goldsmiths are exceptional at.

This process isn’t as straightforward as reusing gemstones but is possible.

What to be aware of

Our experts will review your jewellery on an individual basis in our onsite workshop and offer honest advice as to whether you can achieve your design with it.

This process works more effectively for simple bands like wedding rings, rather than rings with a gemstone set into them. This is because there’s a danger that tiny air bubbles will form, which could cause problems with a fine setting.

Sometimes it isn’t more cost-effective than using “new” gold. Whilst your precious pieces may seem to have a lot of metal; you will end up with less metal than you thought. In this instance you could add more of your own unworn jewellery, or we can make up the difference using remnants from our own workshop. This means no new gold is ordered.

You can’t change the alloy – so for example we can’t turn yellow gold to white gold with this process.

Platinum is sent to our casting company who can melt your pieces down in a high-pressure vacuum, ready for reusing. Alternatively, we can join our creativity to repurpose it in our own workshop. For example, we can reuse the shank (the part that goes round the finger), perhaps adapt the profile, and add a new setting to hold your gemstones.

If you’re unsure what metal your piece is made of, we can check, starting with taking a closer look at the hallmark.

Get in touch if your unworn jewellery is ready to be transformed into something perfect for you.
