Sterling silver cufflinks using YAG from Neal's lasers

Neal and Wendy work with lasers and so when it came to designing a special pair of cufflinks for their wedding they thought it would be nice to celebrate this by incorporating some of the laser crystal into the jewellery. Neal had a rod of yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG for short) which we thought could work really well in the cufflinks but needed a little protection from the unintentional battering that a pair of cufflinks can take. We handmade a tube of silver exactly the right diameter for the YAG to fit into, cutting the ends at an angle so that the crystal can be seen whilst still being as protected as possible. The crystal was sent to our lapidary to be custom cut and for the ends to be polished so that when in the tube they glow gently. The hinge backs make them easy to put into a shirt without an extra pair of hands!
