Spinel Engagement Rings
Harriet Kelsall discusses the similarities between spinel and ruby and how to use it in your engagement ring
Spinel are beautiful gemstones that has been used for centuries and comes in a range of colours. Many years ago spinels were used and often confused for rubies; this was easily done as the colour of a spinel can be very similar to that of a ruby. It was only relatively recently that the large red stone in the Crown jewels was identified as a spinel rather than a ruby. There are some differences between them and this is what we use to tell them apart. A ruby will be harder than the spinel, it also has a higher density. A spinel is singularly refractive but a ruby is dichroic.
There are so many lovely rich coloured spinels that you could choose from in your beautiful bespoke engagement ring and these range from a gorgeous purple to a beautiful vibrant red. These lovely gemstones make a fantastic addition to a ring and are becoming very popular because of their beauty and likeness to a ruby.
