Night Sky Inspired Jewellery: Designs Featuring Stars, Moons and Galaxies
Discover night sky-inspired jewellery, including celestial engagement rings, star sapphires, meteorites, and Northern Lights designs
With dark winter evenings in full swing, and the awe-inspiring moon at its brightest last weekend, my attention is frequently drawn to the beautiful night’s sky. Something that I’m privileged to see a lot of here in (very flat) Cambridgeshire.
Over the years we’ve designed and made many beautiful bespoke pieces of jewellery inspired by all kinds of different aspects of astronomy and astrology. When I was recently cataloguing our past commissions and other design work, I was reminded of just how different one engagement ring design can be from another. Even those with a similar inspiration. This is, of course, because our team design for the individual, to make sure that the piece is just perfect for the wearer’s style, colour preferences and lifestyle too.
Some of the interesting celestially inspired engagement rings that stood out to me feature blue sapphires. It’s hard to imagine three more different engagement rings and yet they all have a similar theme. One took the inspiration from our own swirling galaxy, the milky way. One uses a striking star sapphire at its centre – a special type of sapphire, cut to emphasise the asterism caused by tiny crystal needles reflecting light, which forms the star shape. And finally, a design inspired by a shooting star; a beautifully romantic idea to capture in a special relationship ring.
White diamonds are of course a classic choice, but did you know that we can even source half-moon shaped diamonds?
This is one way to make a night sky inspiration a bit more subtle. Not just that, but we’ve even set a piece of meteorite for a customer too! On the outside you wouldn’t know the inspiration. But to this couple, the concealed element is so very special. And what a story to tell future generations!
The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) have also inspired a number of stunning engagement rings and other pieces. Often by mirroring teal and aqua colours within the theme, but also in setting style. This particular ring uses a stone setting style that I enjoyed reviving 25 years ago – star setting. Star setting is where little grains of metal are raised to hold the stone firmly. Then, leaving engraved star points to catch the light. This adds a different dimension to the design.
Of course, our designs inspired by various aspects of the sky at night are not only limited to engagement rings. It’s just as popular for eternity rings and dress jewellery, where each are designed to reflect the wearer’s stories and loves of all things astrological.
