Metal Choices for Bespoke Wedding Rings
A discussion about the precious metal finish options to help decide designs and styles for bespoke wedding rings
Here are some useful tips when choosing a bespoke wedding ring.
Getting the correct size ring which is comfortable for you and securely fits on the finger is essential. The key factors to remember when wearing the ring on are making sure you feel a slight resistance over the knuckle. Summer heat affects your finger size, so making sure you don’t loose your precious ring at the beach is important to keep this in mind. As well as long, romantic walks on frosty mornings during Christmas could mean your fingers are slightly colder and more likely to slip off.
At Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery our goldsmiths can size rings as detailed and accurate as ½ and ¼ sizes just to ensure you feel you have the right tightness and comfort whilst wearing your ring. If you want to size your own finger in the comfort of your own home.
A second aspect of deciding what characteristics and style you want is choosing the finish. It is important to know that all finishes will eventually become a dull shine over time. This is not an issue to worry about as our in-house Goldsmiths can re-apply your finish for a small additional cost years after your piece has been made.
The metal finishes we offer begin with a polish; this is a high shine appearance which has gone down three polish grades before reaching its perfect shine. Any finish you have will go through this process as it is essential that there are no tiny scratches on the metal that could be seen after satinisation or rhodium plating.
Which leads onto a second finish we offer, Sanitised finish gives the lightest matt appearance. If you are wanting a modern, contemporary look this would be a good option to have. Depending on the person affects the rate of time the satirised finishes takes to become a dull shine.
Following on to a more in depth matte finish is a Pin-end finish, applied to the metal on a mop motor, which flicks the surface of the metal, giving it a slight sparkle quality. This finish is harder wearing then the satinised finish, but will dull over time, again can be re-applied by for a small charge.
Lastly a favoured finish among male wedding bands is the Tunstall finish. Applied using a motorised burr moving fast over the surface of the metal. Due to this process means it is hard to apply against two different types of finish. This is the most hard-wearing out of the three matt looks and can be re-applied for a small additional cost.
The types of metal finishes that have an organic, individual appearance is the Hammered, Ripple and Bark effect. All these finishes use a process of hammering small circular, vertical or horizontal lines onto the metal and the Ripple effect is file marks. Both effects are permanent thus allowing another additional finished such as polished or matt to be transferred over the top of the hammered effect. Ever ring with this hammering effect is individual; you will never get two rings with the same pattern or depth.
