Looking for an engagement ring can be pretty daunting as it is… but what about when you are on a strict budget?

Here are some tips to help you get a great result without breaking the bank.

Have a little think about the metal you would like to go for, this can be a great way to keep an eye on your expenditure. Metal costs do of course vary on a fairly regular basis depending upon the market, so keep an eye out any you may be able to make a saving this way! In general however platinum tends to be the most expensive metal option in terms of jewellery design. If you are interested in having an engagement ring of a similar quality to platinum but are maybe a little cautious of the costs you could perhaps consider having a palladium engagement ring designed. Palladium has many of the beneficial qualities of platinum e.g. it does not tarnish, it has a lovely bright white colour and it very hard wearing, and is often a less expensive option than platinum. Softer metals such as white gold and silver can be a great option as they can be more easily worked on by a goldsmith, which may minimise the time required to construct your engagement ring or wedding ring. Just remember if you are looking to have a white metal engagement ring or wedding rings you could always choose to have white gold bands and then have them rhodium plated to improve upon their resistance to scratching and general wear and tear.

Black Rhodium Plated Ring

Rhodium is a metal which can be used to plate jewellery; it is a part of the platinum family of metals and will help protect your wedding rings from undue scratching that may occur. Just bear in mind that this plating will naturally wear away over time and may need to be reapplied at a later date.

Another aspect to consider is the gemstones you decide to have in your design. Traditionally diamonds are used in engagement rings, however today a whole array of gemstones are available for use in your wedding jewellery. Try to keep an open mind as there are so many different gemstones that could be used to fit within your budget. Or, if you are still hoping to go for a more expensive stone you could consider having a lower carat weight or quality to suit your needs.

Don’t forget though if you are still at a loss you could choose to have a less elaborate design or even choose to have the ring engraved to bring out its unique style without having to burst the piggy bank!

Remember that the great thing about a bespoke engagement ring is that you can set your own budget before you start, guaranteeing that you won’t have a nasty surprise when you receive the final bill!.
