GOING FOR (FAIRTRADE) GOLD

Sometimes we take the small things for granted. We don’t realise the limitations of losing basic life essentials, like the availability of fresh water or electricity.

So let’s look at a world where a small choice can introduce the basics and flourish into big changes. And so we answer: What is Fairtrade Gold?

The Fairtrade mark is one of the most recognised brands in the world- on par with Coca Cola! We know the name, we see it on television and in the aisles of our favourite supermarkets. Now Fairtrade is in jewellers– a change we at Harriet Kelsall helped introduce into the industry.

But, how much do we really know about Fairtrade gold and how has it built a reputation in the jewellery industry?

Starting from the top, the process of extracting Gold is an arduous one, involving chemicals like mercury and cyanide. Historically, proper training and protection on how to use and dispose of them has not been readily available. As a consequence it left miners of all ages handling them with bare hands. This has devastating consequences, where miners and the surrounding environment are harmed.

And so entered Fairtrade.

What does Fairtrade do?

Fairtrade has made a paramount difference to support artisanal and small-scale miners and their communities. With Fairtrade involvement their gold miners now receive:

  • Appropriate training, including daily safety briefing
  • Adequate PPE
  • Environmental guidance

What sets them apart from other schemes, beyond safer working conditions, is their dedication to people.  Valuing their lives and the community drives the process.

For example, did you know most miners have a 2nd income? Fairtrade do. Their plan therefore supports miners in these ventures too. Whilst offering certified Fairtrade mining training to all genders, they also offer guidance in other industries such as agriculture. This ensures their people have the best possible opportunities to support their families in all economical climates.

As well as that, they offer a minimum gold price- if the global price drops, the miners’ earnings will never go below the set fee. Of course, if the cost of gold increases that is also reflected in their pay!

More importantly, and a reason why we at HK Bespoke are proud to be Fairtrade certified, is due to the Fairtrade Premium. This is a guarantee that a percentage of earnings goes directly back into the community.  Unlike some other schemes, this premium is given to the people, to let them decide where it will be best invested or used. Macdesa, the cooperative we source our gold from. have used their premium to provide their Peruvian community with lighting, water supplies and access to education.

It’s incredible to think how much of a difference you can make by choosing Fairtrade gold . What we might see as something small is the means to a brighter future for a whole community. The bespoke journey is already a personal one, knowing your beautiful piece can be Fairtrade Gold makes it all the more meaningful.
