Our ‘wedding fingers’ can be a little confusing at times, as some people alternate between their left and right. Alternatively you may feel like it’s a given as to which finger is a wedding ring finger. Not only does this vary in cultures, but there is actually a rather romantic reason as to why wedding rings go where they do.

In Western cultures, the wedding ring finger is the same finger as the engagement ring finger –  typically, the fourth finger on your left hand. This is how it has become known as the ‘ring finger’. This tradition evolved from a wonderfully romantic philosophy during the Roman period. During this era, they believed that the vein in this particular finger ran directly to one’s heart, and named it the ‘vena amoris’. Therefore, it seemed perfectly fitting to wear wedding bands on this finger.  Engagement rings are usually worn on this finger, too which are traditionally coupled with the wedding ring.  Often they then become a stacked set with an eternity ring after marriage too.

We’d like to say that modern medicine and anatomical evidence proved the “vena amoris” to be fact, unfortunately, all fingers have connections to the heart. Let’s not let that shatter our illusions and romantic cores, but perhaps give you choice to stick to tradition or not. Afterall, either way it still connects to the heart, right! We certainly believe that jewellery is an expression of your individuality. So if you want one of your marital rings on a different finger, perhaps to reflect your own culture or for personal preference…go for it! What makes it stand out most of all is the design and how that reflects your own love story.
