Spring is in full swing, the days are feeling longer, the sun is shining and it’s getting warmer every day. This article takes a look at the different design options to achieve beautiful and timeless jewellery using May and June birthstones as we make the transition from spring to summer.

May: Emerald

The birthstone for May is traditionally emerald. It’s also the birthstone for the Zodiac sign Gemini. Emerald is the only stone, apart from topaz, that is listed in all of the ancient birthstone tables. It is also linked to 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.

Emerald is well suited to a traditional style setting like an 18 carat yellow and white gold halo design

For something with a more modern feel, you could also design an emerald eternity ring including heirloom jewellery .

Emeralds not only work well in rings but they’re great for adding a splash of deep green to pendants and earrings too. A particular bespoke pendant we love is inspired by the iconic shape of the Sydney opera house with emeralds as a reference to Australian waters.

On the other hand, pairing emeralds with diamonds in earrings creates a classic look with a modern twist. The combination of 18 carat yellow gold, clear diamond sparkle and vivid green offers a clean and crisp style.

June: Pearl

According to the modern list of birthstones by the National Association of Goldsmiths in 1937, pearl is June’s birthstone. It’s also the anniversary gemstone for the 12th and 30th year of marriage.

Pearls have been used in jewellery for centuries and have a beautiful natural lustre and shine. Whether its ivory drop earrings with silver hooks, a single pearl on a chain or a trio of pearls they seamlessly transfer between everyday and occasion.

May and June’s birthstones offer a number of different design options and both carry the vibrancy of nature, suited to spring to summer. Both stones are very soft due to the way they form naturally, but you can discover how best to use them in a design. Importantly your bespoke designer will take into account how they are going to be worn and how often. If you have any questions or thoughts about using an emerald or pearl in a piece of jewellery please do let one of our designers know and they can discuss the best option for setting and design with you.
