Spiritual Gemstones
The term spiritual gemstones is often used for engagement rings as well as other jewellery. This article aims to answer the question - what does this term mean and where did it come from.
Today the use of ‘spiritual gemstones’ has become a popular option when deciding upon engagement ring and wedding rings. Why has this become so popular? What does it mean? And where did this idea come from anyway?!
Certain gemstones have always been associated with this idea of spirituality, and what is the main root of this? …Religion. Yes most of the gemstones we acknowledge as having some kind of spiritual meaning were made so by early religious practices. For example lapis lazuli was used in Ancient Egypt as an adornment for coffins and headdresses in religious burial rites, but today it is know for its cleansing properties. This concept has developed over time and expanded into various religious practices and beyond e.g. rosaries, worry beads and even ‘twelve steps’ beads!
In a society today where ideas such as; yoga, feng shui and meditation have become a norm, its no surprise that these ‘spiritual gemstones’ that can ‘power up your chakra’ have become re-popularised. The meanings for different gemstones have become quite varied to suit all kind of needs. Healing gemstones include amethyst, crystal and moonstone. Or if luck is what your looking for you could try having your wedding ring set with pink opal or tiger’s eye! As opposed to protective gemstones which include agate, snowflake obsidian and malachite. But if these aren’t your ‘cup of tea’ try thinking outside the box with you engagement ring design to incorporate something a bit unusual such as mother of pearl, rose quartz, aventurine or even mystic topaz! Today there are even gemstones which equate to zodiac signs, planets, body parts or to help you sleep!
Just remember if you are hoping to choose one of these gemstones for your engagement ring, be sure that it appeals to you both for its meaning and appearance. If you like your stones ‘au naturale’ have a think about which gemstones appeal to you and what aspect of their appearance really keys in your interest e.g. do you like the organic aspects of the gemstone such as any inclusions, lustrous qualities or even little bits inside of the stone such as seedlings, if so perhaps gemstones such as amber or labradorite might suit your needs. Or perhaps you like the idea of having a ‘spiritual element’ in your engagement ring but would prefer that to not be in connection with the gemstone. If so maybe you could choose to have the ring engraved with elemental features e.g. sun motifs, or you could incorporate them into your design e.g. with a crescent moon shape surrounding a central stone, or you could even choose to have the stones in a star setting!
There are so many lovely ‘spiritual gemstones’ out there these days, just be sure to keep your eyes peeled and the perfect stone might find its way into your engagement ring design!
