Choosing a Semi Precious Engagement Ring
Discover why choosing a semi-precious engagement ring can create a unique-to-you look. Consider aquamarine, amethyst, tourmaline and more
So you are looking for an engagement ring… the trouble is you can’t seem to find the ring for you. Have you ever considered commissioning a bespoke engagement ring instead ? This might offer you the options you are missing on the high street. If you love gemstones that aren’t regularly found in the engagement ring section of you local jewellers you could choose to have a design suited to you!
There are a whole bunch of reasons for choosing to have one of these more unusual gemstones incorporated into your engagement ring design and here at Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery we love to hear them! Perhaps you love more spiritually themed engagement ring and wedding ring designs and feel a less traditional gemstone would better reflect this. Or maybe the gemstone fits well with a design idea you have. For example if you are inspired by Ancient Egypt you could want to have a gemstone such as lapis lazuli incorporated into your ring design to remind you of their lapis lazuli and gold artworks! Or maybe you simply don’t want to be traditional! If this is you, then read on for some helpful hints and ideas to consider when mulling over your design ideas.
The traditional gemstones used in engagement rings and wedding rings have become popular not only because of their lovely appearance but also because of their excellent properties for everyday use. Gemstones such as diamonds, sapphires and rubies rate at 9-10 on the Mohs scale. This scale rates the hardness of gemstones and can have a total rating of 10. These gemstones are of course ideal for use in jewellery worn on a daily basis such as wedding rings and engagement rings as they are more resistant to general wear-and-tear.
Perhaps there is a more unusual gemstone that has taken your fancy but you are a little worried about the gemstones properties. Many of the semi-precious gemstones not regularly used in wedding jewellery do not have the same level of hardiness to them, turquoise for example has a rating of 2-6 on the Mohs scale, whereas amber has a rating of 2.5.
Have a little think about the aspects of the stone that you like. By consulting with a designer you may find that there is a gemstone better suited to everyday use that you could have incorporated into your design. Don’t forget allot of gemstones such as sapphires and even diamonds are available in a whole array of colours! Or if you are concerned maybe you could use the gemstone as a part of your design but as a side stone rather than the central gemstone. Don’t worry though if your heart is set on a less hardy gemstone here at Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery we will make sure your gemstone is protected. If you are hoping for a more delicate gemstones such as amethyst or rose quartz, we could always incorporate into the engagement ring design aspects that will provide security for the gemstone such as a setting that will keep it protected from the general wear and tear that can happen. Of course if this issue still worries you, you could always choose to have these gemstones incorporated into another part of your wedding jewellery that will be worn on a more occasional basis such as a necklace, bracelet or earrings for your special day!
