Using birthstones within jewellery is a thoughtful, meaningful way to  create a piece of jewellery that will be treasured for many years to come.

There are many interpretations of the birthstone that have evolved through time, cultural changes, and civilisation. Different meanings and different metaphysical powers are now defined in the form of various precious stones. Through history our predecessors have been simultaneously defining different classifications of birthstone, giving us the many options that we have today.

The Traditional

The idea for the Traditional birthstone is said to be an ancient one, scholars trace the origins back to the Breastplate of Aaron that was described in the Bible. The Breastplate of Aaron (a religious garment) was worn as a representation of the twelve tribes of Israel. Set within the garment in four rows of three;

Sardius, Topaz and Carbunde Tourmaline.

Emerald, Sapphire and Diamond.

Ligure, Agate and Amethyst.

Beryl, Onyx and Jasper.

The connection between the twelve tribes and the twelve months was made later in writings by Flavius Josephus (1st Century AD) and St Jerome (5th century AD) where they made the association between the twelve signs of the zodiac and the tribal breastplate. Each of the twelve stones was said to obtain special powers that connect with the astrological signs, and if someone wore the correct stone in the correct month it would have both talismanic and therapeutic benefits.

The Mystical

Mystical birthstones are thought to be of Tibetan origin and date back over thousands of years. Ancient lore advises wearing these stones as a way of helping to overcome life’s obstacles in their birth month.

The Ayurvedic

Ayurveda dates back almost 5000 years, as a form of healing and medicine. Originating from India, the idea is that the treatment brings your ‘dosha’ or your individual nature into balance. ‘Doshas’ come in three different types; Vata, pitta and kapha. The majority of people are a combination of two or three of the doshas.

The Modern

The National Association of Goldsmiths decided after many years of different interpretations, to attempt to standardise birthstones, compiling a modern birthstone list in 1912, which apart from the addition of Tanzanite (added in 2002) has remained the same ever since.

Many of our customers will choose birthstones from the different lists as a way of getting the perfect combination for their design.
